The Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU and VCU Health have resumed gender-affirming care and medications for existing youth patients, according to a statement posted on Tuesday. VCU has not resumed gender-affirming surgeries.

VCU joins UVA Health in resuming gender-affirming care after President Donald Trump issued an executive order that attempted to set a precedent to suspend care for youths under age 19.

A federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order in response to multiple lawsuits filed to object to the order.

Both UVA and VCU initially discontinued care at the direction of Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares in late January.

UVA resumed care on Feb. 14 after the court rulings; VCU did not, stating that Governor Glenn Youngkin’s office advised them that the AG’s directive still stood.

Despite this, effective yesterday, VCU said it would continue prescribing medication to existing patients under the age of 19.

As soon as feasible, VCU is looking to refer patients requiring gender-affirming medication and/or surgeries to non-VCU Health providers.

VCU, like UVA, also said it would continue to counsel new patients to provide education and mental health services.

“We will continue to keep you informed regarding this evolving situation. We are grateful for your support as we navigate these times and continue to advocate with a focus on the health of our patients and providers,” the statement said.

VCU services include medical hormone management, voice therapy, prescription medications and letters of medical necessity.
